This year’s shirt auction campaign has raised more than half a million pounds for the Royal British Legion, bringing the total amount donated to the RBL to almost £3.5 million during MatchWornShirt’s six-year partnership.
Shirts from the matches played in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday were auctioned, with Matheus Cunha being Wolves’ highest earner, taking in £1,260.
The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal took place from Thursday 24 October to Remembrance Sunday on 10 November; each year the RBL leads the nation in Remembrance in the UK to honor the contributions of our Armed Forces community, past and present.
Since it was first worn as an act of remembrance just over 100 years ago, the red poppy has become an enduring symbol of support for our armed forces. This year, the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal highlights the mental scars associated with military service.
Ben France of the Royal British Legion said: “Battlefield trauma and mental health problems can manifest at any time in life and in a variety of ways, including addiction, debt, homelessness and relationship breakdowns. Your Poppy enables RBL to support those struggling with the turmoil and disruption of service life, and life after service.”
James Flude, Head of Business at MatchWornShirt said: “The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices our Armed Forces community has made, and we are incredibly proud to support this cause for the sixth consecutive year. At MatchWornShirt we would like to give fans the opportunity to own a piece of football history. Each signed, match-worn jersey from this campaign not only captures a unique moment in the sport, but also ensures vital support for veterans and service members continues.”
Every donation to the RBL’s Poppy Appeal helps provide vital support to the Armed Forces community and ensures their unique contribution is never forgotten.
